PARLIAMENT, INTERNET AND REPRESENTATION THE DEMOCRATIC PROMISE UNVEILED

From its beginnings, Internet has carried a democratic promise. As different models of democracy exist, the interpretations of this democratic promise vary accordingly. In this paper we look at how three political websites that focus on the Dutch Parliament have aimed at fulfilling the democratic promise of better representation within the representative model of democracy. We use Pitkin’s classification of representation: formalistic representation, descriptive representation, symbolic representation and substantive representation. We take a look at the websites Wiekiesjij.nl, Politix.nl and Schaduwkamer. We conclude that although the websites aim at strengthening different aspects of representation, the substantive view is the most prominent
